Try easy. (Plus, something beautiful to watch...)
This morning I taught a yoga class themed on just two words: try easy.
The idea comes from sutra 2.46: Sthira sukham asanam—create the pose as steady and comfortable.
Fun fact: it’s the only reference to a physical yoga practice in the Yoga Sutras. It invites us to practice both effort and ease, no matter the shape we are in or the situation we're facing.
Many of us are experts at trying hard. We white-knuckle our way through chaturanga, then carry that same grip into the meeting, the inbox, and the bedtime routine.
"Try easy" is a different instruction. My teacher, Baron Baptiste, would say, “Do the thing. But be easy about it.” Keep the effort. Drop the clench.
Here is your invitation to practice this week:
The next time you catch your jaw tight or your shoulders up at your ears, change absolutely nothing about what you are doing. Just soften your face. Take one long exhale. Same task, without the grip.
Something to watch
Our Summit video came back from the videographer, and I have watched it more times than I care to admit! :)
It's a two-minute glimpse of the magic that happened at Chatfield Botanic Gardens at the beginning of the month and what we’re creating again for next September 10-12, 2027.
Sixty seconds of what happened at Chatfield Botanic Gardens at the beginning of the month. If you were there, you will find your weekend in it. If you weren't, now you know.
Denver Yoga Summit 2027 (September 10–12, 2027): Super early bird tickets to next year's Summit are officially open at the lowest price we will ever offer. Get your ticket
